Spring loaded or self opening scissors are designed to open automatically using a spring action, reducing the need to physically open them between each cut. The spring loaded action can help relieve hand strain and fatigue caused by the repetitive opening action when using scissors.
A range of scissors are also available with varying shaped handles, blade lengths and designs for use with tasks such as sewing, grooming, cooking or within an office or medical environment. Some scissors are also designed in right or left handed models. Scissor finger placement handles are available in a range of shapes such as loop style, ‘D’ shaped style, flat bar style, large grip style or multi holed to allow two people to operate at once. Scissors can also come with safety guards on the external surface of the blade for increased safety.
Other specialised scissors are available including:
- scissors that are either placed or mounted on the desk with rectangular support legs. Material for cutting is placed between the scissor blades and cutting is undertaken by pressing down on the scissor handles
- scissors operated like tweezers as the handles are pushed together they cut
- roller style cutters which cut using a rolling action of the blade over a flat surface and eliminate the need for the repetitive opening action required during scissor use
- flat bottom bladed scissors with pivoted blades for maximum leverage when cutting heavy materials
- cutting blades designed similar to a computer mouse which are pushed over a surface using the palm of the hand.
Workplace solutions and adjustments
For people who have a physical or neurological impairment that may affect strength and dexterity in the hand, spring loaded or ergonomic scissors may allow them to become more independent in the workplace where use of scissors is required.
