Lighting—full spectrum

Full spectrum lighting are lights that claim to replicate natural daylight as much as possible. However as natural daylight is not a consistent source of light due to clouding, pollution, dust, time of day, water vapour in the air etc it is a difficult light source to copy. Full spectrum lighting is therefore suggested to be a constant light source with equal energy across the spectrums visible region.

It is suggested full spectrum lighting aims to reduce glare from overhead lights or computer screens, improve visual acuity including colour perception, and generally aim at producing a more natural light source and overall a more comfortable work environment. This may then reduce eye fatigue and potentially increase work performance and productivity. Full spectrum lighting is generally more expensive to purchase than other lighting options.

Workplace solutions and adjustments

For work areas with minimal natural lighting and where staff are reporting eye strain, soreness or fatigue, evaluation of existing lighting is recommended to ensure it meets all Australian Standards. Suitably qualified lighting consultants may be able to provide specialist lighting advice which may include the use of full spectrum lighting.
