Non slip matting is specialised material that can be placed under objects to stabilise them and prevent movement. Through the use of non slip matting, some tasks can be done one handed or require minimal use of the support hand, and enable physical efforts to be focussed on the task.
A range of non-slip matting materials are available which can be purchased:
- on a roll so it can be cut to size
- pre-cut in specific sizes and shapes
- as a self adhesive mat if wanting to apply permanently to items such as bowls
- as self adhesive strips and panels for application to smaller items such as cutlery, knives or kitchen utensils
- slip resistant mesh netting which can be cut to size
- matting which can be used within water if wanting to place in the base of the sink to stabilise dishes when washing one handed.
Another option to assist in stabilising objects in the kitchen includes double sided suction devices where the bowl or object is held via suction to one side and the other side is held via suction to the bench.
Workplace solutions and adjustments
For people with disability which limit their ability to use two hands, non slip matting placed under objects or appliances can enable independent task completion. If working within a kitchen or catering environment, non slip matting placed under bread boards, mixing bowls, trays or plates can enable tasks to be completed with one hand without use of a second hand or means of stabilisation. It can also be used within the sink to stabilise dishes when washing up.
Non slip matting pieces can also be utilised over the tops of jars or bottles to assist with gripping and opening to reduce the force required by the wrist and hand.
