The talking multimeter performs all the functions of a traditional multimeter such as measurements of volume, current, resistance, frequency and capacity except the readings are heard rather than read. The speech is clear and there is often a volume switch to make the voice louder or softer. Talking multimeters are available as standalone units or as specialised units which if attached to appropriate accessory units can provide read outs of pH levels, temperature and air pressure.
