Toileting aids and appliances allow individuals with a disability to manage their toilet hygiene independently. This can be especially important within the working environment. Such aids and appliances include:
- cushioned toilet seats
- grab rails
- over toilet frames
- raised toilet seats
- toilet lifts.
Workplace solutions and adjustments
Within the workplace, consideration should be given regarding provision of adequate toileting facilities to allow an individual to manage toilet hygiene independently. Consideration should be given to the design of the bathroom and whether it promotes easy access for an individual with a disability. To ensure adequate accessibility for wheelchair users and individuals with impaired mobility, the bathroom facilities should include:
- adequate turning space for wheelchairs
- provision for installation of grab rails
- suitable height toilet and toilet paper dispenser
- suitable height hand wash basin, soap dispenser and hand towels or dryer
- lightweight doors that open easily and are self closing, or the provision of an auto door opener.
If an individual with specialised toileting needs travels and stays away from home as part of their work role, consideration will need to be given to the availability of appropriate bathroom facilities in accommodation or external workplaces.
Funding for toilet and bathroom modifications or equipment required by individuals within the workplace that are disability specific and not something usually provided by an employer can be applied for under the Employment Assistance Fund.
