Walk up changing tables are a standard height changing table with a built in set of steps to enable children of walking age to climb onto the change table without the Carer having to lift them on.
Workplace solutions and adjustments
For individuals working in the childcare industry who are unable to lift or bend due to a physical injury or a lifting restriction, a walk-up changing table can enable them to assist an infant to climb the steps independently onto the changing table and also reach the sink without them having to physically lift the child.
It is also recommended changing tables should be adjusted to a comfortable height to minimise bending and reaching and this is usually with set up between hip and waist height. Adjustable height changing tables can accommodate multiple height users.
Where the nappies and associated equipment are stored can also encourage bending, twisting and reaching which can lead to or exacerbate injury. This is because if the nappies are located quite low underneath the change table on open shelving, the Carer is more likely to bend over rather than squat. Therefore it is recommended nappies be located at the same height as the change table, so minimal reaching or bending is required. For example, the nappies could be stored in a drawer directly underneath or to the side of the change table.
