Manual wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and scooters may require maintenance, servicing or repairs for both optimal functioning and extending the life of the mobility device. Wheelchair and scooter repair operators may offer either mobile or workshop based repairs and service, however there is usually a call out fee for mobile work. Repairers generally offer a range of services including:
- maintenance checks or servicing
- tyre or tube replacement
- upholstery and frame repairs or replacement
- cleaning
- rust proofing
- spare parts
- wheelchair and scooter rechargeable battery testing or replacement, including battery chargers
- repairing damage and wear such as suspension
- motor rebuild or replacement
- modification or customisation of wheelchairs and scooters.
Please note some repair services are brand specific, repairing or servicing particular brands only. Repairs are generally done on an hourly rate and a pick up/drop off fee may be applicable if it is not possible to drop off the required unit independently. Some repairs centres operate a home service and will visit the individual at home to carry out the repairs. Some wheelchair and scooter repair operators can organise loan chairs or scooters whilst repairs are being undertaken.
Specific tyre repair products available for manual wheelchairs include:
- tyre puncture eliminating fluid which can be used as either a puncture preventer or repairer
- high density rubber tyre inserts which replace tubes and minimise or eliminate punctures
In some states, the emergency roadside vehicle repair service offers assistance with emergency repair of electric wheelchair tyres whether the user is a member of that organisation or not. Check with individual state based organisations for availability of this service.
