An employee assistance program is a confidential counselling and consultancy service for employees and members of their family experiencing difficulties that affect their wellbeing either personally or in the workplace.
Employers can contract an employee assistance program provider for an agreed period of time and annual cost.
The various services available within the employee assistance program and the number of sessions available to employees can be negotiated and agreed upon through the contract including:
- 24 hour crisis service
- conflict resolution
- consultation and advice to supervisors and managers
- early assessment and prevention
- group counselling
- individual face-to-face or telephone counselling
- mediation
- trauma counselling
Employees can self refer to an employee assistance program provider or can be referred by their supervisor.
Employee assistance programs can help with:
- alcohol and other substance abuse issues
- anxiety and depression
- emotional stress and trauma
- grief and loss
- harassment and discrimination
- interpersonal conflict
- legal or financial difficulties
- pressure and stress
- relationship difficulties
- work-related problems
In some cases the employee assistance program provider may suggest or refer an employee to seek other professional or expert assistance.
