There are many resources, services and incentives available to you when employing people with disability. Australian Government employment service providers are able to work with you by providing assistance with recruitment of people with disability and, in some instances, supporting employees at work.
‘I think businesses are hesitant to employ people with disabilities for the simple reason that they may not know what support there is for these people’, states Michael Ebejer, Managing Director at Elynwood Pty Ltd.
Jo Spiteri, Catering Manager also Elynwood Pty Ltd adds, ‘Organisations such as Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service (CRS) Australia have been wonderful in assisting with putting people back into the workplace. The internet also provides opportunities, with various websites like JobAccess. The Government is taking the initiative to go out there and promote these types of services to the general public, so there's a lot of help out there’.
Steven Bennett, Managing Director of Benbro Pty Ltd says: ‘The service provider provides all the support that we need, but after the employee's been in the job for a period of time, we find that we need them less and less. However, they are always available on the end of the phone’.
At Perth Regional Roof Trusses, Managing Director, Darry Marshall explains the importance of using a service provider: ‘Deafinite Employment, as the service provider, are very important from both our perspective and the boys' perspective. If the guys have ever got any problems in the workplace or anything they'd like to discuss, Deafinite always are more than happy to come out and go through anything with us. So the relationship has really worked very well and the service provider offers ongoing support to both us and our employees’.
Emma Davies, Equal Employer Opportunity Coordinator of Hunter New England Area Health Service outlines the benefits of using a service provider: ‘Castle Personnel Services is an agency which is for people with disability. We actually look at Castle Personnel to help us provide support and training as required. Also with the apprentices, they come out and do site visits and ensure that they're getting the required training’.
