Since Allan lost his left arm in a motor vehicle accident he has had trouble finding permanent work.
Previously Allan worked as a farm hand, so he sent in applications and attended interviews for this sort of work. After repeated set backs, Allan got free help from his Job Services Australia provider.
Allan’s Job Services Australia provider, NEATO Employment Services, encouraged him to consider new opportunities.
Seeing Allan’s desire to work and his keen, up-beat attitude, Allan’s adviser at NEATO suggested he apply for a job as an appliance tester with Tim the Toolman.
After the interview, Tim, the employer, said, ‘I couldn't believe how positive and determined Allan was. He wanted this job more than the other applicants’.
Allan’s positive attitude set him apart from the other job seekers, but Allan still had one more thing to overcome to get the job: the vehicle and equipment for the job needed two hands.
This was not a problem for Allan because NEATO helped Tim apply for vehicle modifications and new equipment through the Employment Assistance Fund—an Australian Government scheme that pays for the costs involved in modifying the workplace or purchasing special or adaptive equipment for eligible employees with disability.
Considering new opportunities, a positive attitude and applying for modifications enabled Allan to get work.
Now, he is in a job he can see himself doing forever.
If you want to work, be positive and consider your employment options—thinking outside the box may open up new opportunities. At your interview, you may also like to draw you employer’s attention to the Employment Assistance Fund and let them know that this support is available.
