Darren is employed as a Trades Assistant at Caloundra Wreckers where his job involves Four Wheel Drive and commercial vehicle processing. Darren spends his day pulling parts from these vehicles using an array of specialist tools. The work is difficult for Darren as he sustained nerve damage to his right arm following a motorbike accident fifteen years ago, leaving him with only one functional arm. Through a Supported Wage Assessor, Darren learned about the JobAccess service which arranged for him to have a workplace assessment.
Darren was referred for a workplace assessment with Brian who was able to outline the specific barriers that Darren faced at work as a result of his disability. These barriers included having to make twice as many trips as his colleagues to carry tools and parts due to having one functional hand, thereby affecting Darren's productivity in the workplace.
The workplace assessment recommended the purchase of specialist equipment which has helped Darren become more productive on the job.
With the assessment recommendations, JobAccess was able to provide Darren with funding for several tools and pieces of equipment that have made Darren's job easier including a rattle gun and modifications to a forklift. Darren says "with the forklift I can get around with the tools, lifting cars up so I can get under them, to make sure they are stable.....it's less stress on me and I'm getting more work done. The boss is happy that I'm getting more products out".
