Bipolar disorder—Melissa’s back at work and happier

For some time, Melissa’s episodes of depression and erratic responses to everyday situations had been causing problems in her workplace. After a series of incidents her job was in jeopardy.

Following a visit to her doctor, Melissa was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. She had thought she was just ‘highly strung’ and did not realise that she had a mental illness.

With her consent, Melissa’s employer organised for Disability Employment Services provider, the NEPS Centre, a specialist psychiatric service, to be involved in assisting her retain her job at a department store.

The NEPS Centre helped Melissa to talk through issues and get things in perspective. They also helped Melissa’s employer to modify her job so that it included less stressful administrative work.

Melissa is now much happier and is performing well at work.

She is still learning to ‘leave work at work’, but with help and support from her doctor, work friends, employer and the NEPS Centre, she is making steady progress.

Melissa appreciates the help of her employer and the NEPS Centre, recommending to anyone who is having difficulties with their work life that ‘NEPS has helped me to stay in one piece’.

If you have had problems related to illness, injury or disability at work, you may be eligible to access Job in Jeopardy support through Disability Employment Services.
