For some, trimming bonsais can be a good stress relief. For others it can really help with self esteem.
Barry recently experienced a loss of work and reduced responsibilities due to his mental health condition. This had a major impact on Barry's feeling of self worth.
A change in career is what Barry needed to get back on his feet again, so he decided to give gardening, which was a hobby of his, a try. Bonsai Social Firm gave him a job one day a week as a nursery assistant trimming bonsais.
In order to make this new job work, Barry needed the support of his manager and other staff members. The staff and management from the nursery obtained mental health awareness training from Eastern Access Community Health in Victoria. This training helped them better understand Barry’s needs and taught them how to be more supportive.
Barry, together with a mental health support worker from the area health service, discussed options with his manager to tailor supports for him. Barry was unable to work in the sun as the sunlight affected his medication, so a suitable shaded area was found for him to work in. A flexible working arrangement was put into place allowing Barry to take breaks when he needs to. A mental health worker was available for any concerns that Barry had relating to work.
As time went on Barry’s confidence grew and he was able to take on more and more responsibilities. After a year in the role he was offered a sales role three days a week.
Barry’s success has been wonderful for both him and the entire company. Other staff members are proud to be part of a socially conscious company. Having a supportive work environment has been fantastic for staff morale.
