Kellie is a determined young woman. Graduating from university with a double major in accounting and marketing she sought an employer who had a positive attitude toward employing people with disability.
As a young woman, who is profoundly deaf, wears very powerful hearing aids and relies heavily on lip reading, Kellie chose Telstra’s graduate program as the offer of employment that best suited her needs.
In her graduate year, she has successfully completed three different placements which have drawn on her qualifications. Currently, she is a Senior Pricing Specialist in the Pricing Development team, where she has a wide range of tasks and responsibilities.
Kellie says that the strategies which have been most useful to her in overcoming various difficulties are as follows:
-
When people phone her, if she is unable to clarify exactly what they are saying, she asks them to email or SMS her.
-
For ‘talk’ with her colleagues, she regularly uses Telstra’s Microsoft Office Communicator, which allows instant talking to colleagues.
-
Kellie is based in the same building as the majority of people with whom she interacts, which allows her to rely heavily on her well-developed lip reading skills.
Kellie’s future plans include:
She is justifiably proud of her professional success and appreciative of the high quality of support and encouragement that she has received from her employer.
