How to look for advertised jobs

Traditionally jobs have been advertised in newspapers, shop windows and community notice boards.

Some ways to look for advertised jobs are outlined below. This is not a complete list but is definitely a starting point!

Newspapers

Many employers advertise their vacancies in newspapers.

Larger newspapers generally have a ‘Careers’ or ‘Jobs’ lift out once or twice a week. Smaller newspapers may have a few pages dedicated to jobs.

You can buy a newspaper or browse through your local library’s selection of newspapers. Some community newspapers are delivered free to your home.

Most newspapers are also available online and the jobs they advertise often go onto their web site.

Online job boards

There are a number of online job boards, such as Australian Jobsearch, MyCareer (see our Related Links) and Seek (link provided above), that you can use.

Australian JobSearch is an Australian Government web site. You can access Australian JobSearch on the Internet or through touch screen kiosks located in Centrelink and Job Services Australia offices around Australia. If you need help using the kiosks, Centrelink and Job Services Australia staff can help you.

There are also some online job boards that target certain industries. For example (links will open in a new window):

Some companies also have their own online job boards, so if you want to work for a specific company you might want to check out their web site.

Notice boards

Community notice boards often post job opportunities for part time and casual positions so remember to check these out.

Notice boards are usually located in shopping centres, supermarkets or community centres.

Shop windows

Some retails advertise their vacancies in their shop window. If you want to work in retail, you can have a look in your local shopping centre. Remember to bring your resume with you, so you can hand it to the shop manager.
