Reasonable adjustments at the interview

If you need any adjustments to allow you to attend and participate in an interview, you may need to discuss your disability with your potential employer and request reasonable adjustments. These adjustments are called ‘reasonable adjustments’ and they enable you to have equal opportunity to be considered during the selection process.

For example:

  • a person who is Deaf may require an Auslan interpreter to be present at the interview
  • a person with vision impairment may need detailed instructions and extra time to find the location of the interview.

It is important to discuss the recruitment and interview process with employers so that you can determine whether you might need some adjustments.  If you do require reasonable adjustments, have a conversation with the employer and:

  • be clear and matter of fact about why you are disclosing and your desired outcome from doing so
  • be knowledgeable about your disability
  • provide some options and strategies for making the reasonable adjustment at the interview to make it easy for the employer.

An employer is then required to take into account your disability and make any appropriate adjustments to accommodate you at the interview.

If your employer would like some advice about making reasonable adjustments you could provide them with the phone number for the JobAccess Advisers, 1800 464 800, or direct them to this web site.
