How to settle in (induction)

Congratulations on getting a job! You might be feeling a little anxious—a common response when just starting out in a new workplace. JobAccess provides information to help you settle in and can also point you to sources of support during the induction period.

Your rights and responsibilities at work
When starting work it's good to be aware of your rights and responsibilities (and the rights and responsibilities of your employer) when it comes to disclosure and privacy, discrimination, occupational health and safety, reasonable adjustment and workers compensation.

Support for Deaf workers during induction
JobAccess provides information on support that Deaf workers can access during induction.

Some tips for your first day

You'll want to make a good impression on your first day at work. Dress appropriately for the workplace—think back to what people in the workplace were wearing when you went for your interview. Try and relax, communicate openly and positively with others you'll be working with. Start to remember the names of people you work with. Be observant about how things work in this new working environment.

When you are just starting work you will need to be in regular communication with your supervisor and co-workers so that you understand what your tasks and responsibilities are. If you are unsure what to do, ask questions and observe the people around you.

Some workplaces run an induction or orientation program to help new employees understand their new workplace, its policies and procedures and points of contact within the organisation.  In some jobs, induction is more informal and mainly involves learning on the job.

You may ask for support from your supervisor, human resources or equity officer or employment services provider during your induction and on the job training. They can assist you in making the modifications and adjustments that you may require as you settle into your job. In some cases you may need to work out a different process or approach to your job tasks.
