Learning through work experience

Are you interested in gaining experience and developing new skills in the workplace? Many job seekers find that work experience helps to get a job.

Work experience allows you to observe what happens in different jobs. It also allows you to practice doing some jobs. Work experience is usually unpaid. It is usually set up for a defined period of time, which can vary. Some work experience may be full-time for three or four weeks. Some may be for one day a week for 10 weeks.

Work experience can have a number of benefits. Work experience can:

  • help you clarify the kind of work that best suits you
  • provide you with new skills and knowledge
  • improve your resume
  • improve your confidence
  • give you experience you can refer to in a job interview
  • increase the number of people who can help you get a good job in the future
  • result in an offer of employment at the end of the work experience placement.

Some employers may advertise work experience opportunities. You or your employment service provider may also directly approach employers and ask to be considered for a work experience placement.

Employers will generally require you to be covered by work related insurance to participate in a work experience placement.

Work Experience Activities

The Australian Government funded Work Experience activities will meet the cost of work related insurance (personal accident and public liability insurance) for eligible job seekers. This makes it easier for you to get work experience.
