Marketing yourself for promotion

Have you been in your current job for a while and are ready for a new challenge? Is there another job or position that has grabbed your attention? JobAccess has some tips on marketing yourself for promotion.

Continually developing your skills and performing well in your current job is a great place to start if you are considering applying for a new job. Focus on developing skills that are required for the promotion you are seeking. You may want to volunteer for new tasks or roles within your team or take on a temporary project that extends your abilities.

Ensure your manager is aware of what you are achieving at work. Provide your manager with updates on your or your team’s achievements and progress to demonstrate that you achieve results and to increase your visibility within the organisation.

It is important to develop relationship networks within your organisation or industry so you are aware of new positions that are open and you are known by key people that could employ you or that you may work alongside. Making your manager or key industry contacts aware that you are interested in a promotion may also help you if they are willing to support you and identify potential new roles for you.

Finding a mentor in your organisation or industry may also help you to develop the necessary skills and build the organisational contacts you require to achieve a promotion. They may also advise you if further training or education is appropriate. Look for someone you respect, who is more experienced than you and is willing to assist you with your career goals.

If you receive employment assistance from a Disability Employment Service and your job role changes they may be able to give you intermittent support to help you adjust to your new responsibilities.

The Workplace Modifications Scheme pays for the costs involved in modifying the workplace or purchasing special or adaptive equipment for eligible employees with disability. It is also available to existing employees if they have had a change in duties, career progression and/or a new modification becomes available that would increase their productivity.

If you aren’t immediately successful in gaining a promotion, don’t be discouraged! Ask for feedback to explain why you weren’t selected for the position, identify areas for improvement and keep building on your skills. With persistence, you may well secure the next new job opportunity or promotion that arises.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 makes it unlawful to discriminate against people with disability in employment. Your employer should not unreasonably deny you a promotion because of your disability.

Do you want information on discrimination and what to do if you experience it?
