Succeeding in the job


Starting a new job can be exciting, but also stressful. JobAccess provides some helpful tips to help you succeed in your job.

Develop good work habits:

  • arrive on time
  • inform your supervisor if you will be late or absent from work
  • wear clothing appropriate to your workplace
  • work diligently and conduct personal business on breaks or outside work
  • work safely and in accord with workplace policies and procedures.

Developing good work relationships will help you do your job well and enjoy a positive work environment. Develop rapport with your work team by listening carefully, seeking to learn from others and keeping a positive attitude. Be willing to volunteer to help your co-workers when needed and take on the less popular tasks. Own up to any mistakes you make and ask for help when you need it.

Most supervisors want you to succeed in your job. Maintaining clear and open communication with your supervisor will help you understand what is expected of you in your job. Ask for regular feedback on your work performance and, if necessary, review your workplace modifications and work practices to ensure you are able to perform your job effectively.

Try to address any workplace problems early on rather than letting the issue get bigger. In the first instance talk to your supervisor, however a human resources, disability or equity officer at your workplace may also provide support in resolving the issue. In some situations your employment service provider may assist by communicating with you and your employer about how to best accommodate your disability in the workplace.

If you think you are at risk of losing your job because of your disability, injury or health condition you may be able to access Job in Jeopardy assistance from a Disability Employment Service. Disability Employment Service providers will assist you to manage your disability, injury or health condition so that you can keep your employment with your existing employer. Job in Jeopardy assistance can also include job redesign, training, purchasing special equipment, modifying the workplace and helping your employer. You may approach a local Disability Employment Service provider to get help. You do not need to be registered or referred by Centrelink. 

When you started your job you may have discussed workplace modifications with your employer to enable you to get the most our of your job. If your job role changes you may need to review your workplace modifications with your employer.
