The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) recently announced amendments to the Public Service Commissioner’s Directions 1999. The aim of the amendment is to make it easier for people with disability to gain employment in the Australian Public Service (APS). The amendments which can be applied from 7 July 2010 provide greater flexibility for APS agencies to employ people with disability.
The changes enable an APS agency to create, design or identify an appropriate position for a particular person with disability who, while having the capacity to perform the duties specified, would find it difficult to compete in a traditional merit selection process.
Positions designed or created based on the amendments must be consistent with existing work level standards and expectations and be designed for the potential employee based on their individual strengths, capabilities and capacity in consultation with a D
isability Employment Services provider.
