The first response of many employers is that they have already tried hiring someone with disability but it was unsuccessful and they would not want to try it again.
In responding to this concern, you should attempt to find out what happened. Negative experiences could be a result of:
- a poor job match
- the job not being initially regarded as meaningful employment with realistic goals and expectations
- the person’s disability was not initially apparent
- inadequate support from an employment service provider.
Furthermore, you should urge such employers not to judge all potential employees with disability by the failure of one. You should also make employers aware of the assistance available through your service and the financial help that may be available to them.
Storytelling about a wide variety of job placements is one of the best ways of demonstrating to employers the potential of successful employment for job seekers with disability.
