Group Training Program

Another option for job seekers is to find an Australian Apprenticeship through Group Training.

Group Training Organisations employ people and place them with host employers. Group Training Organisations are active in almost every industry and manage and monitor the apprenticeships or traineeships.

Group Training can also help people find a permanent job when they complete their apprenticeship or traineeship.

The extra support job seekers receive from Group Training Organisations through dedicated field officers makes employment through these organisations an excellent option for people from various groups, including people with disability.

For you as the service provider, Group Training Organisations can work with you to provide on the job support to apprentices and trainees. Group Training Australia has also published a best practice guide for placing and supporting Australian Apprentices with disability. (link will open in a new window):

There are several Group Training programs that can assist people with disability:

Group Training Australian Apprenticeships Targeted Initiatives Program

This program enables Group Training Organisations to generate quality Australian Apprenticeship opportunities in priority areas that would not otherwise happen without intervention.  This includes areas where the achievement of successful Australian Apprenticeship outcomes requires additional time, resources or development effort. For more information about this program, see our Related Links.

Projects funded under the program must target identified equity groups, regional areas with high unemployment, new industry markets, or higher level technical qualifications including Diploma and Advanced Diploma.

Group Training in the Trades Prevocational Program

This program assists eligible people to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship in the trades.  It creates opportunities by:

  • providing eligible participants with pre-vocational training in the trades to gain pre-requisites to articulate into an Australian Apprenticeship in the trades; or
  • allowing students to undertake an Australian School based Apprenticeship in the trades while still completing their year 11 and 12 higher school certificate at school.

Particular focus is given to trade areas experiencing skill shortages or areas where Australian Apprenticeships in the trades are being under-serviced, especially through Australian School based Apprenticeships. People from various equity groups including those with disability are eligible for this program. For more information about this program, see our Related Links.
