Independent living services focus on your ability to function independently at home and in the community if you are living with disability. They include independent living programs and Independent Living Centres.
Independent living programs
People with disability can be provided with strategies and advice to find solutions to live independently in their homes at work and in the community.
Disability employment services (DES) provide independent living programs. The two main programs provided are:
- Disability Management Service(DMS)—this service is for job seekers who have a temporary or permanent disability and have been assessed as requiring long-term ongoing support in the workplace on average less than once a fortnight
- Employment Support Service (ESS)—is for job seekers with a permanent disability who require long-term ongoing support in the workplace at a minimum of a fortnightly basis.
Other services that are associated with DES and may be of use include:
- Job in Jeopardy support for people who are at risk of losing their jobs as a result of their disability
- The Employment Assistance Fund which provides financial support to people who have a disability and require work related equipment or modifications.
Independent living centres (ILC)
If you have a disability, you may use aids or equipment for support as you participate in various activities, or simply to improve your quality of life.
Independent living centres are located in every state and in the ACT. They showcase a comprehensive range of products and equipment to assist with daily living activities.
You can try out the display products and equipment and select the most suitable prior to purchase direct from the suppliers. The centres do not sell items.
The Independent Living Centres Australia website has contact details on all state based independent living centres (please note that this link will take you to an external web site in a new window):
