About us
JobAccess is the national hub for workplace and employment information for people with disability, employers and service providers.
Created by the Australian Government, it brings together the information and resources that can ‘drive disability employment’. Along with this website, there is:
- a telephone advice line (1800 464 800)
- the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) for workplace modifications and support
- An employer engagement service - the National Disability Recruitment Coordinator (NDRC)
- Complaints Resolution and Referral Service
- National Disability Abuse and Neglect Hotline
The benefits of disability employment
Around one in six Australians now live with disability. Yet people with disability can be overlooked for employment opportunities due to a lack of community awareness, exposure and understanding. Like all employees, people with disability work in a wide variety of jobs. They bring a range of skills, abilities and qualifications to the workplace.
Studies have proven that people with disability are reliable and productive employees. Workplaces often benefit from lower recruitment, insurance cover and compensation costs, and higher retention rates.
The issue
The unemployment rate for Australians with disability is double that of people without disability. Only 61% of Australians with disability are participating in work compared with 85% of Australians without disability.
Research shows that many employers lack the confidence and resources to employ people with disability. They are unaware of the Australian Government support and programs available to help them.
While the majority of employers say they are open to hiring people with disability, only around a third of businesses are actively doing it.
