How Work Assist can help
Work Assist provides free help to people with disability, illness or health condition to keep their job.
A Disability Employment Services (DES) provider will work with you and your employer to provide support to keep your job.
Employers are supported by DES providers to keep you working so they don’t lose a valuable team member.
What help can you get?
Work Assist help can include:
- face-to-face support, such as meeting in person for appointments
- a full workplace assessment to work out what support the employee with disability needs
- advice about redesigning a job, for example changing or swapping tasks
- workplace changes or special equipment
- referrals to health support services, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pain management or counselling.

Who is eligible?
To get Work Assist, you need to:
- be currently employed
- have been working in the job for at least 8 hours a week on average for 13 weeks
- be assessed by the DES provider to show you are having difficulty doing your job
- be at least 14 years old but have not reached the Age Pension age
- be an Australian resident. Employees who have a Temporary Protection visa, Safe Haven Enterprise visa or Resolution of Status visa can access support from DES-Employment Support Services.
How to apply for Work Assist
Contact a DES provider to apply for Work Assist services. Go to Find a Disability Employment Services provider to search for a provider near you.

Your DES provider might work with your employer and co-workers to provide you with Work Assist.
But you can still get Work Assist if you don’t want to share information with your employer about your:
- disability
- injury
- health problem.
What support can you get?
Work Assist can provide you with:
- in-person support
- advice about changing the tasks you do at work
- support to manage your disability, injury or health problem
- support to contact health services.
Work Assist can also support you by finding out if you need:
- special equipment
- A reasonable adjustment is when you ask to change something because of your disability.
Your DES provider can connect you to other services that might be able to help.
For example, the The EAF can cover the cost of supports and services so people with disability can do their job and get help with finding a job.
Who can get Work Assist?
To get support from Work Assist, you must have worked:
- at least 8 hours a week
- for the last 13 weeks.
You need to be:
- at least 14 years old
- not studying full time
- not old enough to receive the Age Pension.

You need to be an Australian citizen.
But you might be able to get Work Assist support if you have one of these types of A visa is a document that says you can go to another country for a certain amount of time. This might be to travel, work or live.

Your DES provider needs to check that you:

- don’t get support from another DES provider.
