How Workplace Adjustments Helped This Self-Employed Handyman Stay in Work

For Michael, being a self-employed handyman is more than just a job. It’s a way to stay active, help others, and support his family. Each day is different, from fixing fences and mowing lawns to installing grab rails in homes for people with disability.

“I run my own business doing handyman work and garden maintenance. Every day is different. One day I might be outside hedging or mowing lawns, and the next I could be indoors fixing odd jobs for clients. I also do a fair bit of work for the disability sector, such as installing grab rails, which I find especially rewarding. It’s a great feeling knowing I’m helping people who really need it,” says Michael.

But managing the physical demands of the job hasn’t always been easy. Michael lives with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This condition lowers his energy levels and leads to pain and weakness, mainly in his arms and hands.

“By the end of the day, I’d often have no energy or mental space left which meant I couldn’t fully be there for my family. That really affected me emotionally,” he explains.

Michael first learned about JobAccess about seven years ago. His Physiotherapist recommended it to him. He connected with JobAccess through MS Plus Employment Services. This helped him continue working safely.

“JobAccess explained how they could help keep me employed and make my day-to-day work easier and they were right,” says Michael.

Since then, Michael has received funding for lightweight tools. This includes hedge trimmers and chainsaws, as well as a harness that lessens the strain on his upper arms. These adjustments have made a big difference.

“They’ve helped me reduce fatigue and ease the pressure on my body and mind,” says Michael. “Now when I get home, I’m not as exhausted or frustrated. I have more energy to spend time with my wife and girls. That means the world to me.”

Michael says the support from JobAccess and MS Plus has been life changing.

“Just knowing JobAccess is there if I need support gives me peace of mind. And having someone like Maria from MS Employment Services in my corner - that’s made all the difference.”

His message to others? Don’t wait.

“If you’re self-employed and living with disability, don’t be afraid to reach out. I was hesitant at first. I didn’t want anyone to know I was struggling. But the JobAccess team is supportive and understanding. They’ll help make your work life easier and more sustainable. It’s been a game-changer for me.”
