Maddie’s return to veterinary work with JobAccess support
In 2019, Maddie graduated as a veterinarian. Just one year later, her life changed after she suffered a serious horse-riding accident.
As she began her recovery, Maddie was determined to stay connected to the work she loved. While in the hospital, her future veterinary employer visited, offering support.
“I was lucky enough to have a position created for me designed around my capabilities after the accident,” says Maddie.
Returning to work meant her employer had to make the clinic more accessible.
That’s where JobAccess came in. Through the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF), workplace adjustments were made so Maddie could work safely and comfortably.
"JobAccess helped with a button door and a ramp for entry to my workplace. They also helped get a new microscope with a screen."
“This equipment lets me access my workplace. That and the new microscope are vital to me doing what I love," says Maddie.
Today, her colleagues continue to find ways to include her in everyday tasks and clinical work, ensuring she remains an active part of the team.
“My workplace has shown inclusiveness and understanding throughout the whole journey,” says Maddie.
“From setting up faecal egg counts with my support worker to making up sterile needles for the consultation rooms and the crash cart. My colleagues have made an effort to understand this new rehabilitation life and show a keen interest.”
“Being part of an inclusive team means the world to me. You never know when your life could change in an instant, and it's great to have the support of people behind you.”
For employers supporting someone return to work after an injury or illness, Maddie suggests being open-minded.
“Try to be understanding and show empathy. Try to think outside the square about what people can do with a disability.”
