Susan keeps doing the work she loves with JobAccess support
Susan has spent her career supporting people with disability find and keep meaningful work. She didn't expect to need that same support herself.
As an Employment Consultant, Susan works closely with clients, helping them achieve their employment goals. Then, in an instant, everything changed.
Susan was a passenger in a serious car accident and suffered multiple injuries. She fractured her collarbone, sternum and vertebrae, and burst discs in her cervical spine.
"Without the right support, I suffer higher pain, increased nerve discomfort, and loss of feeling in my arms and hands," Susan says.
Returning to work after an injury like this is not simple. Sitting for a long time, holding her neck in certain positions, or using a standard office chair could make her pain and symptoms worse.
Susan already knew about JobAccess from her work in disability employment. So, when she needed support herself, she knew where to turn.
The Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) helped Susan get a customised chair which supports her neck during work.
"With the chair to support me, I'm able to sustain ongoing part-time work in the office without suffering increased pain and distress," she says.
This simple workplace adjustment has made a big difference to her comfort and ability to stay in her career.
Susan has a clear message for employers considering workplace adjustments for their staff.
"Having the right supports allows employees to perform better and take less time off - at no cost to the employer.”
