Our job seekers

Vision Australia is the largest blindness and low vision service provider delivering specialist employment services across regional and metropolitan locations in NSW, Victoria, ACT and QLD. Vision Australia delivers a specialist employment service committed to assisting individuals with low vision or blindness to access quality, sustainable employment opportunities and also retain their current jobs through: 1. Development of job seeking skills, which includes: Interview training Assistance in applying for a new job Resume development Disclosure advice This involves clients attending workshops at the Vision Australia centres. 2. We find and support work experience for clients wanting to gain experience and knowledge in an industry and job role that they wish to gain employment in and we can cover the insurance. 3. Conduct worksite assessments once the client has gained a job or is currently in a job, and we recommend adaptive technology equipment and environmental modifications so the individual can perform the job role successfully. 4. Training in the use of adaptive equipment and on the job support including converting work manuals, other printed material into accessible formats. 5. Vision Australia conducts vision assessments and gives recommendations. Our holistic approach to employment services include: Orientation and mobility training Equipment solutions Quality living programs Low vision services Independent living services Criteria for employment clients: Must be diagnosed as vision impaired that cannot be corrected by glasses. Some of the employers that Vision Australia Canberra has built relationships with through job placements and reverse marketing are: FAHCSIA, Community Services Directorate, IGA Supabarn Grocery Store, Noni B, Bunnings. To ensure that the most suitable job seekers are sent to employers, Vision Australia Canberra provides skills assessment and development, support for job interviews, including corporate hosted mock interviews that provide job seekers with real life interview experience and feed back. Furthermore, conducting pre-vacancy audits and information sessions for employers have assisted in identifying potential roles for our job ready clients and in responding to any misconceptions or concerns.

Our networks

Vision Australia Canberra networks with Centrelink/Employment Services Assessors, Australian Public Service Commission, Canberra Institute of Technology and ACT Department of Education and Training, Network of Employment and Training Agencies (NETA), Communities at Work Network, just to name a few. The Canberra team works closely with secondary schools and visiting teachers who specialise in working with students with vision impairment.

Our performance

Vision Australia Canberra has established itself as a viable and effective Employment Service to people with blindness and low vision. It has achieved this by growing its case load to 26 clients by the end of the 2012 financial year, generating 50% of its referrals through direct registrations. This indicates that a strong percentage of clients choose Vision Australia Canberra because of its specialist blindness and low vision services. Up to June 2012, the Canberra site has supported 8 of the 9 placed job seekers into roles above their benchmark hours, including 6 into full time work.
