Our job seekers

NOVA will help you set goals and take the steps to achieve them. We work hard to get to know our jobseekers’ interests and skills so we can match these to a job. Our workshops help with confidence, interview preparation and presentation and learning to job seek.

Please read on to learn about how NOVA supported two job seekers in their new roles:

A 19-year-old man with an intellectual disability recently started working in a busy retail store. His tasks are well within his abilities, but because of the wide range of products and the pace of the store, providing structure and using a list system so that he knows exactly what is required of him during each day, is essential.  NOVA staff were with him every day in the first two weeks and assisted learning the requirements of the job. We devised a task list for each element of the job so he can manage when we were not there. As new tasks are added we’re there to facilitate his learning.

A young man with anxiety, depression and an ongoing medical problem came to us because he wanted to work with computers. NOVA helped develop his self-esteem and devise career goals. We discovered that he only chose computers because he thought that’s all he could do. We realised that this well-spoken and likeable young man could do well in sales. We contacted car sales offices and secured him an interview. With intensive coaching in interview technique, he got the job and is now happily working in car sales.

Our employers

Employer–NOVA relationships are built on trust and reliability. An employer can trust that they will receives the service they were promised, this often leads to other NOVA job seekers being offered positions within the company or referrals to other employers.

NOVA has placed job seekers in a range of industries, including financial services, aged care, hospitality, retail, car sales, disability care, administration, real estate, automotive and engineering.

If you’re interested in partnering with NOVA, the process is simple.

All you have to do is describe the role and your needs.

Here are some of free services we provide include:

Disability understanding in the workplace

Workplace support and adaptive equipment

Onsite training and orientation of your new employee

Training the worker to ensure they are a productive team member

Regular reporting and progress meetings with the employer

The type and scale of support depends on the job seeker and the realities of the worksite. In the early weeks of employment, NOVA is generally at the worksite daily. Support reduces as the jobseeker and employer become more confident that the role is being performed well. At any stage the jobseeker or the employer can contact us if difficulties arise. In this case, our support increases again until such time that the worker is on track.

“I have worked with other disability services in the past, but NOVA beats them all hands down by the service they give and the way they stay in touch with us.” – Mick, sales

Our networks

The community knows who we are and what we do. With our solid reputation, being associated with NOVA Employment raises our various partners’ profiles because local people realise our partners also contribute to our community in a positive way.

Linking to appropriate services helps us understand and meet our job seekers’ and employers’ needs. It means we can refer our jobseekers to any specialised service that is outside NOVA’s area of expertise

Local business awards give us a great excuse to promote our work! We regularly contact our local papers with a good news story about someone.

Our performance

Since 1990, NOVA Employment has helped thousands of people with a disability find employment.

At NOVA job retention rate is high because we have a strong belief in matching the job seeker to the right job. But don’t take our word for it. Have a look at some of our statistics.

We believe that full-time work with a learning component can be a vital part of a person’s career development. It’s also a great way to earn and learn. We’ve found apprenticeships and traineeships for each of the following NOVA groups:

- 13% of our jobseekers with a Psychiatric Disability

- 11% of our jobseekers on the Autistic Spectrum

- 20.6% of our jobseekers with an Intellectual Disability.

NOVA is committed to ‘closing the gap’ experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI). We’re proud that 57% of our ATSI jobseekers are still in employment a year later.

We work in some of the most disadvantaged areas in Sydney. Young people are particularly vulnerable, due to their lack of skills and experience. Ten per cent our caseload is school leavers with a significant disability so we have extensive experience in assisting young people to make good decisions about their careers.
