Our job seekers
At NOVA, we learn about the skills and interests of our job seekers. Here are two people NOVA has helped into work.
Job: Nursing Assistant
Barrier: Depression
Our 46-year-old jobseeker had been on Newstart Allowance, but found it difficult to make ends meet. She had never worked in aged care, but this was her area of interest. We helped her enrol in a Certificate III in Aged Care. NOVA provided training in interview techniques and assisted her to approach employers and apply for suitable positions. We found her a job, helped confirm her employment conditions and ensured she was coping with the shift work. She is happy and competent in her role.
Job: Administration
Barrier: Asperger’s Syndrome
This young man was receiving the Disability Support Pension and was referred to our employment service from NOVA’s Transition. He was interested in office work and hoped to do a Business Administration Traineeship. NOVA approached an employer we were already working with and negotiated a traineeship. We delivered travel training so he could get to work independently and workplace support for him with requirements of the job.
Our employers
At NOVA, we understand that a strong partnership is based on mutual trust. Our employers are confident that NOVA offers our best, most suitable job seekers, who meet employer expectations. Post-placement support is ongoing and offered to both the employer and the job seeker until you’re happy that the employee is competent in their role. NOVA works hard to understand the specific requirements of your business.
We place jobseekers into large and small businesses in many sectors including: retail, hospitality, manufacturing, vehicle repair and service, warehousing, administration, gardening and grounds maintenance. Apprenticeships are generally within these types of businesses. One local employer have hired a number of our jobseekers as grounds people, some of whom have been working for them for years.
Sourcing staff from NOVA’s skilled pool is easy:
1. Talk to us – learn about the process, ask any questions, take the time to think about your options.
2. Ponder the benefits – Our candidate is matched to the position on offer. There’s no need to advertise, interview and hope you’re employing the right person for the job. NOVA’s post-placement coaching, training and support ensure that employers receive a competent employee.
3. Meet the jobseeker – NOVA organises the meeting or interview, and any follow up required.
4. Employ the jobseeker – NOVA organises support and training; purchase of equipment, traineeships or apprenticeships and other incentives may be available while the employee settles in. The employer can and should discuss any issues that may arise and NOVA will address them.

Our networks
NOVA connects with the community through local high schools and community services. We enjoy working with organisations and businesses who understand the abilities that people with a disability bring to our community.
In particular, schools are important to NOVA as we help students and their families learn about the transition from school into the workforce. We also attend local expos. Our Transition program supports post-year-12 students to learn and develop the skills required to find and keep a good job.
We also maintain a good relationship with TAFE campuses: St George and Ultimo. We work closely with their teacher consultants to ensure job seekers are receiving support to successfully complete employment-related courses.
Our performance
The staff at NOVA has experience working with a range of people with a disability. Many of our jobseekers come from CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds.
Though the majority of our jobseekers are mature workers (46%), we also have extensive experience working with young people (25% of our caseload is aged under 25). We are proud to say that 76% of our Eligible School Leavers (youth with a significant disability) are in employment.
Twenty-two per cent of people who register at NOVA have a mild or moderate intellectual disability. Our expertise in this area doesn’t preclude us from helping people with other disabilities.
Forty-three per cent of the work we find for our job seekers is full-time. These solid statistics are supported by many testimonials:
“From doing NOVA’s Transition program, transitioning into employment has been good. I have had help finding work and forming resumes.” —Carlos, job seeker
And our employers love the work that NOVA-placed workers do:
‘We have five NOVA workers. Most of them have been with us for three years. They work hard with no supervision. During the first three months, our new staff needed supervision; NOVA is here until we’re all happy that everything is running fine. We’re only doing what has to be done, but at the same time we get the benefit of seeing people grow. One girl has an anxiety problem and yet has just taken up the position of Team Leader. Two have been promoted to full-time in professional positions. It’s a win-win thing; it really is.’ —Todd, supervisor
About us
The staff at NOVA work with jobseekers to determine their best employment options. We match a jobseeker’s skills and interests with a realistic and achievable job of their choice.
We provide strong support to ensure both the worker and the employer are happy. This means our jobseekers stay in their jobs long-term.
At NOVA we have good working relationships with schools to ensure the best long-term job matches for school leavers. Many students choose NOVA to help them find employment, traineeships and apprenticeships. We have a solid reputation with other services and employers because we consistently meet both their expectations and our job seekers employment goals.
We have experience working with people from various ethnic backgrounds and understand the need to respect and work with all cultures and beliefs. We appreciate that a jobseeker may have specific family, cultural or religious requirements that must be taken into account when securing employment. Staff at NOVA Bankstown come from diverse ethnic backgrounds themselves.
At Bankstown, we’re happiest when we help jobseekers determine their career options and goals. We enjoy placing job seekers into meaningful positions and seeing the difference this makes to their lives. We continue to support our workers until they meet their own and their employers’ expectations and reach their employment goals
