Our job seekers

Vision Australia is the largest blindness and low vision service provider delivering specialist employment services across regional and metropolitan locations in NSW, Victoria, ACT, QLD and WA. Vision Australia delivers a specialist employment service committed to assisting individuals with low vision or blindness to access quality, sustainable employment opportunities and also retain their current jobs through: 1. Development of job seeking skills, which includes: Interview training Assistance in applying for a new job, Resume development, Disclosure advice. This involves clients attending workshops at the Vision Australia centres. 2. We find and support work experience for clients wanting to gain experience and knowledge in an industry and job role that they wish to gain employment. 3. Conduct worksite assessments once the client has gained a job or is currently in a job, and we recommend adaptive technology equipment and environmental modifications so the individual can perform the job role successfully. 4. Training in the use of adaptive equipment and on the job support including converting work manuals, other printed material into accessible formats. 5. Vision Australia conducts vision assessments and gives recommendations. Our holistic approach to employment services include: Orientation and mobility training, Equipment solutions, Quality living programs, Low vision services, Independent living services. Criteria for employment clients: Must be diagnosed as vision impaired that cannot be corrected by glasses. Must be primary disability as we are a specialist service provider for blindness and low vision. Employers with whom the Caringbah office has built relationships include: Office of Environment and Heritage House with No Steps Revesby Workers Club Swiss Grand Hotel Multicultural Disability Association Relationships have been established through a number of methods including cold canvassing and reverse marketing, matching the right candidate to the job and also offering work experience to enable the employer to find out exactly how our candidate can fit in. We promote candidates who have been assessed by our specialist staff as having reached the level of competency required for the position, for example assessments are done to determine the necessary level of keyboarding and PC skills for office environments.

Our networks

The Caringbah office utilises the supports and expertise of trainng organisations including TAFE, community services, rehabilitation providers. We have used a Recognised Trainng Organisation, Academy Training, to support clients to develop skills in customer service. To facilitate our engagement with the Aboriginal Community and to promote employment services that we are able to provide to them, the Caringbah office has developed a relationship with the Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation. Our network includes: South Western Sydney Vocational Support Network WPC - Group Training Caringbah Neighbourhood Aid Inc St George and Sutherland Community College Sutherland Hospital Sutherland Shire Council St George Mental Health Service

Our performance

Vision Australia Caringbah has been a consistently high performing site. In the 2011/2012 financial year more than half our job seekers who registered for our services were able to remain in employment for more than 6 months after been placed in suitable positions. This has been due to our post placement support strategy that ensures holistic services such as worksite assessments and procurement of assistive technology at no cost to the employer, work place training, co-worker training, orientation to the workplace etc which are provided by our specialist team of staff through a key contact person.
